GCL (Geosynthetic Clay Liner)

GCL (Geosynthetic Clay Liner)

What is a Geosynthetic Clay Liner?

Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) are advanced materials made by sandwiching natural sodium bentonite clay between two strong geotextile layers. This unique combination creates an effective barrier against water. When water gets between the clay layers, the bentonite clay expands, forming a waterproof layer that works as well as several feet of packed clay.

The GCL manufacturing process involves needle-punching fibers through the bentonite layer to create a strong bond between the materials. To make them even more reliable, a process called Thermal Lock is used to enhance the liners’ resistance to shear forces and long-term wear.

GCLs are a smart alternative to traditional soil barriers. They’re known for their ability to work well even on steep slopes, easy installation, and their capacity to handle stretching and settling while keeping water out. They are used in various applications such as landfill caps and base liner applications, dams, canals, ponds, rivers, and lakes, and even waterproofing of buildings and similar structures.

By needle-punching fibers through the sodium bentonite clay layer, a completely uniform, reinforced GCL is produced – with shear strength and stability advantages important to any application, such as:

  • Golf course ponds.
  • Stormwater management ponds.
  • Recreational ponds.
  • Landfill cap closures/baseliner.
  • Dams/dikes.
  • Vertical trench cutoff Barrier.
  • Groundwater protection cover.
  • Environmental protection barrier under roads and railways.
  • Secondary containment for above-ground tanks.
