Summary
A Knoxville homeowner wanted a driveway with the natural appearance of decorative stone that would complement an existing stamped-concrete pad and fit naturally within the riverfront landscape. The new driveway also needed to follow a long, winding layout with two curved sections and perform reliably over soft soil conditions.
Jen-Hill supplied the Presto GEOPAVE® Gravel Paver System, creating a stable, permeable foundation for decorative stone while supporting efficient installation, vehicle access, and long-term stormwater performance.
Challenge
The primary purpose of the driveway design was aesthetics: the homeowner wanted a natural-stone look that would complement the existing stamped-concrete pad near the garage and fit the riverfront landscape.
The system also needed to follow the curves of a long, winding layout and perform reliably over soft soil conditions along the Tennessee River. The project required a permeable, flexible, and affordable surface that could be shaped to the site without sacrificing structural integrity, vehicle access, or long-term stormwater performance.
Solution
Jen-Hill, a Nexterra company, supplied Presto Geosystems’ GEOPAVE Gravel Paver System for the project. GEOPAVE panels were installed across the 3,100-square-foot driveway and infilled with open-graded decorative stone.
The finished system created a stable, high-strength surface with the natural-stone appearance the homeowner wanted while supporting stormwater percolation and reducing runoff into the adjacent river corridor.
A key advantage is that GEOPAVE is designed for fast, efficient installation. The panels can be driven on while unfilled, helping accelerate installation and maintain site access throughout the project. Panels can also be modified in the field to accommodate curves and bends with little waste.
On this driveway, field modifications produced a precise fit through two curved sections. The shared-wall system, interlocking connection clips, and load-spreading mesh bottom work together to resist rutting and shifting under daily vehicle traffic.
Results
The completed driveway delivers the natural-stone appearance the homeowner wanted together with affordability, durability, and environmental performance.
The decorative stone infill blends naturally with the surrounding landscape, while the permeable base system captures and manages stormwater on-site and reduces runoff toward the adjacent river corridor. Field-modified panels produced a precise, clean fit through both curved sections, and the load-distribution structure provides a stable surface for daily vehicle traffic.
About Presto GEOPAVE®
GEOPAVE® is an aggregate porous paving system engineered to confine open-graded aggregate while supporting stormwater infiltration and storage. Its structural framework uses a herringbone cell pattern and monolithic mesh bottom to distribute vehicle loads and help keep aggregate in place.
GEOPAVE panels can be driven on before they are filled, helping maintain site access and support efficient installation. The panels can also be modified in the field to accommodate curves, bends, and site-specific conditions with minimal material waste.
GEOPAVE is designed for applications such as residential driveways, parking areas, access roads, trails, and other sites requiring the appearance of natural aggregate with the stability of an engineered porous pavement system.
